B2B SaaS and the Age of Hyper-Niche

How Astral Shard dictates technological standards across our entire software portfolio to dominate highly specific verticals.

The Horizontal SaaS Graveyard

The era of broad horizontal SaaS is over for new entrants. Every general-purpose project management tool, CRM, or analytics platform is dominated by incumbents with eight-figure marketing budgets and deeply entrenched user bases. Competing in that space as a new player is not ambitious. It is irrational.

The opportunity is in the vertical. Industries, workflows, and user types that are completely underserved by the horizontal giants because their needs are too specific to justify attention from a company trying to serve everyone. These are the markets where a small, focused team with genuine domain expertise can build something that feels indispensable within months.

The AVC Software Thesis

Astral Shard is the incubator for our software ventures. Every tool we build starts as something we need ourselves. We identify a micro-inefficiency in our own operations, build a solution for it, and then evaluate whether that solution has enough external demand to spin out as a standalone product.

OrbitHQ started this way. We needed an SEO automation platform that did not treat reporting as the end product. We built one. Now it serves thousands of pages across dozens of domains and is available as a standalone platform for other teams who have the same frustration we did.

Monopolizing the Workflow

The strategic goal for every B2B SaaS product we build is workflow lock. When a product is embedded deeply enough into how a team operates day to day, the switching cost is not financial. It is operational. Teams do not leave products that have become infrastructure, even when a cheaper alternative exists.

This is the moat we build for: not features, not integrations, not pricing. Indispensability. The product becomes the workflow. The workflow becomes the product. At that point, retention is not a marketing problem. It is a product reality.

We pick the vertical, we dominate the workflow, and we expand from a position of strength. That is how you build durable B2B SaaS without a nine-figure war chest.
