Mercury Falls/Remote/Full-time / Contract

Game Story Designer

Open

Craft the narrative moats, lore, and emotive worldbuilding for Mercury Falls and upcoming interactive ventures.

About the Role

Mercury Falls is an indie game studio building atmospheric, minimalist experiences where story is the product. We believe narrative is the deepest moat a game studio can build — lore that players return to, worlds that feel lived-in, characters that linger. You will be the architect of that moat. Working closely with the founder and a small dev team, you will shape the stories, environments, and emotional arcs that define Mercury Falls as a studio.

Responsibilities

  • 01Develop core narrative frameworks, lore bibles, and worldbuilding documents for Mercury Falls titles
  • 02Write dialogue, environmental storytelling, and in-game text that feels natural and evocative
  • 03Design narrative structures that work within minimalist, atmospheric game design constraints
  • 04Collaborate with developers to integrate story beats into gameplay loops and level design
  • 05Build long-term IP foundations that can support sequels, expansions, and transmedia opportunities
  • 06Research and reference atmospheric indie games, literary fiction, and visual storytelling
  • 07Contribute to marketing copy, devlogs, and community-facing narrative content

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience in game writing, narrative design, or interactive fiction
  • Portfolio or writing samples showing ability to craft mood, tone, and subtle worldbuilding
  • Understanding of how narrative integrates with gameplay — not just cutscenes and dialogue trees
  • Self-directed work ethic — you can own a narrative vision from concept to polish
  • Strong grasp of English prose with an ear for voice and rhythm

Nice to Have

  • Shipped at least one game or interactive narrative project
  • Familiarity with Twine, Ink, Yarn Spinner, or similar narrative tools
  • Interest in 2D atmospheric games, pixel art aesthetics, or minimalist design
  • Experience writing for games with limited dialogue — environmental and visual storytelling

What We Offer

  • +Creative ownership over the narrative direction of an indie studio
  • +Small team, no corporate creative committees
  • +Remote work with async-friendly collaboration
  • +Opportunity to build lasting IP from the ground up
  • +Flexible engagement — full-time or contract depending on fit
